Verse 1
I can see the waters raging at my feet
I can feel the breath of those surrounding me
I can hear the sound of nations rising up
We will not be overtaken
We will not be overcome
I can feel the breath of those surrounding me
I can hear the sound of nations rising up
We will not be overtaken
We will not be overcome
Verse 2
I can walk down this dark and painful road
I can face every fear of the unknown
I can hear all God's children singing out
We will not be overtaken
We will not be overcome
I can face every fear of the unknown
I can hear all God's children singing out
We will not be overtaken
We will not be overcome
Chorus
The same power that rose Jesus from the grave
The same power that commands the dead to wake
Lives in us lives in us
The same power that moves mountains when He speaks
The same power that can calm a raging sea
Lives in us lives in us
He lives in us lives in us
The same power that commands the dead to wake
Lives in us lives in us
The same power that moves mountains when He speaks
The same power that can calm a raging sea
Lives in us lives in us
He lives in us lives in us
Verse 3
We have hope that His promises are true
In His strength there is nothing we can't do
Yes we know there are greater things in store
We will not be overtaken
We will not be overcome
In His strength there is nothing we can't do
Yes we know there are greater things in store
We will not be overtaken
We will not be overcome
Bridge
Greater is He that is living in me
He's conquered our enemy (oh)
No power of darkness
No weapon prevails
We stand here in victory oh
(REPEAT)
In victory yeah
He's conquered our enemy (oh)
No power of darkness
No weapon prevails
We stand here in victory oh
(REPEAT)
In victory yeah

I remember hearing this song on the radio when it first came out and I recognized then how powerful the lyrics are. As it often happens, I had the initial thought and then never really revisited the song in my personal time. Not long after hearing the song on the radio our worship team introduced it to our church. I remember the challenge that was given by our worship leader for us to not just sing the lyrics of a song but to let the concept of what we were singing take root in our hearts. Yet again, I recognized the powerful lyrics but my thoughts about them soon faded away as the days passed by.
Maybe it was a seasonal moment in relation to my thoughts about the New Year or maybe I just took the time to really listen to the message in the song, either way, I believe we all could benefit from taking some time to reflect on its meaning.
In each verse, a declaration is made. I will not be overtaken, I will not be overcome. For me personally, I at times become sidetracked in my relationship with Christ with declarations such as these. Whenever a storm is raging as the song suggests, I stand and shout at the storm. I would like to attribute this response to the Count of Monte Cristo. In the movie adaptation, Edmond is giving a speech at Albert's 16th birthday party and he says, "Life is a storm, my young friend. You will bask in the sunlight one moment, be shattered on the rocks the next. What makes you a man is what you do when that storm comes. You must look into that storm and shout as you did in Rome. Do your worst, for I will do mine! Then the fates will know you as we know you: as Albert Mondego, the man!". This is definitely an epic movie moment. It sounds cool, and I am holding onto the words for Easton's 16th birthday however, after Tara reads this that is probably going to be a no go. Excuse me, I ramble. The point is that life deals up storms. For some of us, we find ourselves in storms that are characterized by gale force winds (honestly no idea what a gale force wind is--most definitely another movie reference trying to surface) and when those storms rear their nasty heads we shout at the storm and tell it that we will not be overtaken or overcome. As Edmond suggests, we dare the storm to do its worst because we are a force to be reckoned with. Maybe you don't but I do. I also really believe it and I suppose that my pride reinforces the idea. However, I am reminded of Isaiah 54:17 that no weapon formed against me will prevail. That's my go to scripture that I shout at storms. Sometimes it works and sometimes I get spiritually hoarse from declaring my "invincibility" to life's storms.
Hang with me a bit longer because I am about to come full circle. As I played through this song tonight these words began to to resonate with me. The same power. The life of Jesus demonstrated God's power through a surrendered life. When we accept the gift of salvation and the Holy Spirit takes up residence in our life we walk with God. This may be the most simplistic but complex statement there is. Again, maybe its just me but it reminds of God's greatness. He gave His very best for us. He doesn't stop there, He invites us into a relationship with Him that He may live within us. When we surrender our life to Christ we don't get a second rate version of the Holy Spirit we get the Holy Spirit. The same power that rose Jesus from the grave, the same power that commands the dead to wake lives in each follower of Christ. I am not sure about you but that perspective is the one I want to focus on. I am going forward with that truth. When the storms rage, I am no longer going to shout to declare my greatness but I am shifting my focus on God's power and greatness that resides in me. I suppose that it is no newsflash but it's not about me. It never has been and never will be. It's about Christ and the story He is writing in my life.
